It's also the season when a whole range of other insects become more active — and more visible — around your home. The problem is that many of them look similar enough to termites that homeowners aren't sure what they're dealing with.

1. Flying Ants vs. Termite Swarmers

This is by far the most common confusion, and it's completely understandable — both are small, winged insects that appear in large numbers during certain times of year, and both are attracted to light.



How to tell them apart:

Antennae: Termite swarmers have straight antennae. Flying ants have elbowed (bent) antennae — the most reliable distinguishing feature.


Wings: Termite swarmers have two pairs of equal-length wings. Flying ant wings are unequal — the front pair is noticeably longer than the rear pair.


Body shape: Termites have a straight, tube-like body with no pinched waist. Flying ants have the distinctly pinched, segmented waist characteristic of all ants.


When they appear: Flying ants can appear year-round but are most common in spring and summer. Drywood termite swarmers peak from July through September; subterranean termite swarmers typically appear in spring.


Why it matters: Flying ants are a nuisance and can sometimes indicate a carpenter ant infestation (see below), but they don't eat wood. Treating for ants when you have termites — or vice versa — solves the wrong problem.


2. Carpenter Ants vs. Termites

How to tell them apart:

Size: Carpenter ants are noticeably larger than termite workers — often a quarter inch or more. Termite workers are small, pale, and soft-bodied.

Damage pattern: Carpenter ant galleries are smooth and clean — almost sanded. Termite galleries are rougher, often with a layered or honeycomb texture.


Debris: Carpenter ants push out coarse sawdust-like frass mixed with insect body parts.

Drywood termite frass consists of uniform, tiny pellets.


Mud tubes: Only subterranean termites build mud tubes. Carpenter ants never do.


Why it matters: Carpenter ants excavate wood but don't eat it — they're structural nuisances that require a different treatment approach than termites. A carpenter ant treatment does nothing to address termites.


3. Powderpost Beetles vs. Drywood Termites

Powderpost beetles are less commonly discussed than termites or carpenter ants, but they're present in the Bay Area and cause real damage to hardwood floors, furniture, and structural wood. Their damage is sometimes mistaken for drywood termite activity.


How to tell them apart:

Exit holes: Powderpost beetles emerge from small, round exit holes in wood surfaces — typically 1/32 to 1/8 inch in diameter, depending on the species. Drywood termite kick-out holes are similar in size but slightly different in shape.


Frass: Powderpost beetle frass is extremely fine — almost like powder or talcum (hence the name). Drywood termite frass consists of distinct pellets with six flattened or concave sides — visible under magnification.


Location: Powderpost beetles commonly infest hardwood flooring, furniture, and decorative wood. Drywood termites prefer structural framing, though they can infest hardwood floors as well.


Adult insects: Powderpost beetles are small, narrow, reddish-brown to black beetles. You may find them near exit holes or light sources.


Why it matters: Powderpost beetle treatment and drywood termite treatment differ significantly. Misidentifying one as the other leads to ineffective treatment.


4. Wood-Boring Beetles vs. Termites

Related to powderpost beetles but worth distinguishing: old house borers and other wood-boring beetles are occasionally found in Bay Area homes and can cause confusion.


How to tell them apart:

Exit holes: Wood-boring beetles like the old house borer create larger, oval exit holes — sometimes up to 3/8 inch across — that are distinctly larger than termite kick-out holes.


Sound: Some wood-boring beetles produce a faint ticking or chewing sound inside infested wood that can occasionally be heard in quiet conditions. Termites are generally silent.


Frass: Wood-boring beetle frass is coarser than powderpost beetle frass and may include small pellets mixed with sawdust-like material.


Age of wood: Old house borers tend to infest newer lumber — particularly softwood framing — while other beetles prefer older, seasoned wood. Termites infest both.


5. Moisture Ants vs. Subterranean Termites

Moisture ants — also called yellow ants — are sometimes found in Bay Area crawl spaces and are occasionally mistaken for subterranean termites because of where they live and the conditions that attract them.

Damage: Moisture ants don't eat dry structural wood — they're attracted to wood already damaged by moisture or fungal decay. Their presence often indicates a moisture problem rather than a pest infestation per se.


Why it matters: Finding moisture ants in your crawl space is a signal to address moisture conditions — and to have a termite inspector check whether termites are also present, since both are attracted to similar conditions.


6. Bark Beetles vs. Termites

Bark beetles are small beetles that infest trees and occasionally firewood stored near the home. They don't infest structural wood inside homes in the same way termites do, but their exit holes in firewood or tree bark sometimes raise concerns.

Location: Bark beetles are found in living or recently dead trees and bark — not in the structural framing of your home.
